Document Summary
Idea that probability may change across time future situations. Risk assessment includes (cid:862)prediction(cid:863) and (cid:862)management(cid:863: prediction: probability that individual will commit future criminal/violent acts, management: interventions to manage/reduce the likelihood of future violence. True positive: correct prediction; when person who is predicted to be violent engages in violence. True negative: person who is predicted not to engage in some type of behavior does not. False positive: incorrect; person is predicted to engage in some type of behavior but does not. False negative: incorrect; person is predicted not to but does. Base rate: percentage of people within a given population who commit a criminal or violent act. Difficult to make accurate predictions when the base rates are too high or too low. Example: several high-profile school shootings much media coverage occur infrequently many youths being wrongly classified as potential shooters. Before 1966: little attention to how good professionals could assess risk of violence.
