ANT101H5 Chapter Notes - Chapter 6: Guenon, Old World Monkey, Galago
Document Summary
Primates members of the mammalian order primates, which includes lemurs, lorises, tarsiers, monkeys, apes and humans. Anthropoids members of a suborder of primates, the infraorder anthropoidea. This suborder includes monkeys, apes, and humans. One way to understand any organism is to compare its anatomy and behaviour with that of other closely related species: this is why so many studies have been conducted on primates since humans are narcissists. Primates have retained ancestral mammalian traits that other mammals have lost over time: horses and cattle have undergone a reduction in the number of digits from 5 to 2. Hard protective covering has developed over the digits. This limb structure benefits prey species since their survival depends on speed and stability but restricts them to only movement losing the ability to manipulate objects. Traits shared among primates: limbs and locomotion. Tendency toward an erect posture in the upper body: whether it"s sitting, leaping, standing, and occasionally bipedal walking.
