ANT200H5 Chapter Notes - Chapter Week 11: Gordon Willey, Archaeological Culture, Paleodemography
Document Summary
Settlement pattern a system of interrelated sites of where groups lived, worked, etc. Groups may have different settlement patterns at different times. Gordon willey was the first to study settlement system and observed they settled around sources of water with landforms suitable for expansion of maize agriculture and defense. Settlement patterns depend on many variables like subsistence system, resources, ideology, technology, and environment. Small scale societies have small number of sites organized in a simple manner: groups with large populations have more complex system. As environment changes, settlement patterns also change. To determine the sp of a group, must determine complete range of activities and sites of groups. People create concepts of space and established boundaries which influence actual location and function of settlements. Location of sites within landscape is dependent on: availability of resources, areas where multiple resources can be found like ecotones are heavily populated, social needs, transportation, defense.
