Document Summary

Way of identifying organisms: order odonata: this predaceous group includes dragonflies and damselflies. Their robust bodies bear two pairs of wings: order orthoptera: orthopterans include grasshoppers, crickets, and katydids. They have two pairs of wings, chewing mouthparts, and hind legs modified for jumping: order coleoptera: coleopterans, commonly known as beetles, are an extremely diverse group. Their first pair of wings is modified into hardened elytra that cover and protect the second pair, the alae (flying wings). The body is armoured with sclerites: order diptera: dipterans are the true flies. Many are eusocial, meaning that they live in a cooperative community of individuals where most do not breed themselves. Their mouthparts are modified for sucking into a long tube. They have two pairs of membranous wings that are covered with tiny scales: order hemiptera: hemipterans, the true bugs, undergo incomplete metamorphosis. The first set of wings is partly hardened and partly membranous (thus the name: hemi = half; ptera = wing).
