Document Summary
Race: social construct used to distinguish people in terms of one or more physical markers, usually with profound effects on their lives. Biological character that links to a geographical location. Ethnicity (ethnic group): perceived cultural markers that are deemed socially significant. Ethnic groups differ in terms of language, religion, customs, values, ancestors etc. Prejudice: attitude that judges a person on his or her group"s real or imagined characteristics. Discrimination: unfair treatment of people because of their group membership. Impossible to neatly distinguish races based on genetic differences. Race matters allow social inequality to be created and perpetuated. Scapegoat: disadvantaged person or category of people that others blame for their own problems. Physical distinctions do not cause differences in the behaviour of various races. Cultural distinctions are often not the major source of differences in the behaviour of various ethnic groups.
