Gender identity: identiication with, or sense of belonging to, a particular sex--- biologically, psychologically, and socially. Gender role: when you behave according to widely shared expectations about how males/females are supposed to act, you adopt a gender role. Theories of gender: a) gender diferences as relection of naturally evolved tendencies and argue that society must reinforce those tendencies if it is to fxn smoothly, essentialism= vies gender as part of nature or essence of one"s biological. & social makeup: functionalists view gender in essential terms. Called universal features of our evolved selves contributing to survival of human species: gender diferences in behaviour are based in biological diferences b/w women and men. A critique of essentialism from the conlict and feminist perspectives. Criticisms: essentialist ignore historical & cultural variability of gender & sexuality. Wide variations exist in what constitutes masculinity & femininity.
