William james observed religion helps believers to cope with the fact we all must die. Offers believers immortality, promise of better times to come and security. Provides sense of meaning and purpose in world that may seem cruel and senseless. Motivation of religion is psychological but the content and intensity of religious beliefs and the form and frequency of religious practices are influenced by structure of society. Religion however governs fewer aspects of life than it used to. Institutions like medicine, psychiatry, criminal justice, education have grown in importance as the scope of religious authority declined. Collective effervescence stuff that makes us feel part of something larger than us. Durkheim states when people live together, they come together to share common sentiments and values. Collective conscience common sentiments and values people share as a result of living together. Collective conscious causes us to distinguish the secular everyday world of (the profane) from the religious transcendent world (sacred)
