Document Summary

Chapter 8: separate and unequal: the gendered world of work (213. Freud said two main tasks we have are: love and work; we must provide for family, move up social ladder and love family. In order for society to survive as whole, labour must be divided; however, in doing so, gendered division of labour is created; most societies have gendered division of labour. There are very few tasks in very few societies that are not divided by gender. Even within gendered division of labour, tasks assigned to males are not more or less significant than the tasks of women and vice versa (so tasks done by both genders equivalent) It"s a surprise to north americans that the gendered division of labour is not traditional, rather a new phenomenon. Graph basically show that women work more hours than men in many countries. Where women are less valued as persons, they tend to do more work than men.
