MGT 500 Chapter 9: Role play and assimilation
Document Summary
The degree that we comply with our perceptions of roles and expectations can be surprising, even when we don"t initially agree with them. When you know about stereotyped roles and conceptions, you can easily and rapidly assume roles, with a vague notion of social role identity. Role abuse can be limited when people are conscious of their own behavior. Norms are acceptable behavioral standards shared by members that express what they should and shouldn"t do under certain circumstances. It"s not enough for leaders of a croup to just share their opinions. When agreed by the group, norms influence behavior without a lot of external controls. Different groups, societies, and communities have norms, but they are all different from each other. Norms dictate the emotional experience for people and for groups. This means people grow to interpret their shared emotions in the same way. Our perspective is shaped by our emotions and moods.
