Document Summary
2/11 the approach of cognitive science (chapter 2) Concept: a general idea or understanding, especially one derived from speci c instances. Takes the form of a knowledge structure that enables or mediates categorizations. To master a concept is to categorize objects or events in ways that could not be accomplished in the absence of the concept. We form concepts via categorization + recognize members of a category via concepts we form. Survival depends on our ability to divide the objects around us into those that are safe. + unsafe, those that are desirable + avoidable, those that are necessary + unnecessary. Experiments on infants support the notion that this ability is innate in humans. Alongside perceptual categorization, humans also categorize abstractly e. g. we sort feelings into physical sensations and emotions. Physical feelings include hot and cold, sweet and sour, loud and quiet . Barsalou: categorization provides the gateway between perception and cognition.
