Sugar & cotton, esp. in the south and caribbean required large plantations & even larger labor forces to sustain; ergo, slavery. Encouraged reproduction (resulted in many mixed-race births) Three-fifths rule : constitutional requirement that three-fifths of a state"s slave population be counted in determining congressional representation. Missouri compromise : southern argument in favor of one new free state = one new slave state. Compromise of 1850 : package of bills intended to diffuse conflict between the north & south incl. Fugitive slave law: allowed federal marshals to seize escaped slaves in all states. American colonization society (acs) : organized started by a southern leader robert finley who believed that slaves should be returned to africa; resulted in the formation of liberia. William lloyd garrison: insisted on the immediate end of the institution of slavery.
