CAS AN 101 Chapter Notes - Chapter 5: Uniformitarianism, Catastrophism, Gregor Mendel
Document Summary
Key concepts: the 18th century brought about an important period of change and discovery. The idea of creationism was brought into question by scholars searching for understanding of how species adapt and develop over time: charles darwin popularized the concept of evolution via natural selection. Species adapt to their environment based on factors including adequate food source, water supply and other strategic resources. Evolution sought to explain the variations in a species population over time. How each species adapts to its environment in order to survive and thrive: gregor mendel studied the concept of dominate and recessive traits through pea plants. Through crossbreeding he discovered how dominate traits asserted themselves in early generations, but that the recessive trait would reassert itself in future generations. His examinations showed that, although a dominate trait was more common, it did not destroy the recessive trait: dna (deoxyribonucleic acid) is the basic building blocks for all life.
