Patient sm - had bilateral amygdala damage: was able to describe fear and indicate she was afraid snakes. But in a pet store - did not display behavior that was similar to this fear. Inability to experience fear wasn"t result of misunderstanding concept of fear: when viewing clips, could exhibit appropriate fear behavior and identify it. So patient was having the emotional experience and knew it, but did not detect and avoid the threatening situation: what was found about amygdala from this: Amygdala plays critical role in identification of facial expressions of fear. S. m fails to experience emotion of fear --> has little impairment in comprehension of other emotions. Inability to feel a particular emotion (fear) contributes to inability to avoid danger. What is an emotion: usually described as a feeling that happens when something else happens, but many researchers describe feeling as a subjective experience of emotion. Distinct from moods - have identifiable objects or triggers.
