Document Summary

Chapter 20 & 21 general & special senses. Sensory receptors : specialized to respond to changes in environment ( stimuli ) Sensory receptors are the interface between the nervous system and the internal and external environment. Sensory information arriving at the cns is called a sensation ; work as transducers convert one stimulus into another (stimuli action potential) Perception is the conscious awareness of a sensation that happens in the cortical areas of our brain. Refers to temperature, pain, touch, pressure, vibration, and. General sensory receptors are distributed throughout the body. Refers to smell, taste, balance, hearing, and vision. Special sense receptors are located in complex sense organs. Examples are eyes, ears, and taste buds. Information is relayed from the receptor to a specific neuron in the cns through specific sensory pathways. Each pathway (tract) carries information concerning a specific sensation from a specific region of the body.
