PSYCH 104 Chapter Notes - Chapter 1: Social Comparison Theory, Normative Social Influence, Social Influence
Document Summary
Compliance: changing one"s beliefs or behavior to be consistent with group standards, doing what we are asked to do even if we prefer not to. Obedience to authority: complying with a person or group perceived to be an authority. Auto-kinetic effect: if you put someone in a pitch black room, in a room with no light, and you shine a stationary light on the wall and tell them to stare at it. Each subject estimates how much the light moved. When the 3 subjects are alone, their movements are very different because it just depends on their eye muscles and control. We don"t know if its normative or informative. Another study basically thought that there wasn"t normative influence if there"s a strong informative influence. If you tell people the right answer and get rid of informative influence, the people won"t do it just to fit in and they won"t conform. You sign up for a perception task.
