1. Function
a. Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS): a degenerative disease of
the CNS causing loss of muscle control. The hardening of the
nerve cells on the sides of the spine leading to the loss of the
muscle tissue from disuse.
b. Anorexia: an eating disorder characterized by the patient’s
refusal to eat
c. Autism: a psychiatric disorder characterized by withdrawal
from communication with others; the patient is focused only on
the self
d. Bulimia: an eating disorder characterized by overeating and
usually followed by forced vomiting
e. Cerebral palsy: paralysis caused by damage to the area of the
brain responsible for movement
f. Dysphoria: a negative emotional state
g. Euphoria: a positive emotional state
h. Epilepsy: a disease marked by seizures
i. Hypomania: a mental state just below mania
j. Manic depression (bipolar): a psychiatric disorder
characterized by alternating bouts of excitement and
depression
k. Myasthenia: muscle weakness
l. Narcolepsy: a disease characterized by sudden, uncontrolled
sleepiness
m. Neurosis: a nerve condition
n. Psychosis: a mind condition
o. Psychopathy: a mental illness
p. Schizophrenia: a mental illness characterized by delusions,
hallucinations, and disordered speech

1. Anesthesia:
a. Anesthetic: a drug that causes loss of sensation
b. General anesthetic: anesthetic that causes complete loss of
consciousness
c. Local anesthetic: anesthetic that does not affect
consciousness
d. Regional anesthetic: anesthetic that is injected into a nerve
causing loss of sensation over a particular area
