MUS 069A Chapter Notes - Chapter 4: Whole Tone Scale, Tetrachord, Major Scale
Document Summary
Scale - a series of incremental pitches, contained within an octave; Most scales are constructed as a series of diatonic step increments. Assembled in either ascending or descending without repetition or omission of any letter names. Concludes with a repeated octave at the end. Consists of specific pattern of whole and half steps. Begin on any pitch and move in consecutive order without omitting or repeating any notes, until all seven are shown. Any note that doesn"t appear on the same line or space as the previous note is a diatonic note. There will always be two sets of half steps in a diatonic scale: e-f and b-c half step. Any seven diatonic scales can be noted as basic scales. Each basic scale has two natural occurring half steps in different locations within the scale. Example: starting note is c, the half steps are between the third and fourth and the seventh and eighth scale degrees.
