ANTH 1 Chapter Notes - Chapter 1: Chris Stringer, Homo Sapiens, Fetal Position
Document Summary
Leg of a bison (with meat on it) Neanderthals are thought to have been the first to bury their dead. Associated burial goods with individuals that represented their status or activity (hunter buried with weapons, etc. ) Thought to have possibly been the first species to believe in the afterlife. Interpreted the la chapelle aux sant site. Said that neanderthal was some kind of encephalitic idiot, or something inferior about it. Argues that modern homo sapiens evolved from archaic sapiens in all regions of the old world. Archaic sapiens collectively evolve into homo sapiens. This likely means that there was very little if any geographic isolation and sufficient genetic exchange among the archaic sapien population such that a single species is maintained. Any differences between humans in asia, africa, and europe will have developed over long periods of time (at least a million years) and would have been influenced by the local/regional environments.
