Chapter 1: the scope of life, why should we care, forensics, understanding population genetics, climate change, diversity of life. 1. 8 million species identified could be (10-100 million) Everything that"s living: ecosystem- all of the living and non living parts of an environment and how they interact with one another. Two main processes within ecosystems: nutrient cycling, energy flow, communities- neighborhoods inside a city. Focuses on certain organisms: population one species that interacts with one another it doesn"t matter the size, organisms one individual organism, organ system- part of the ciculary system. Organs in a system: tissue- a big grouping of cells, cells- has a nucleus. Lowest level of what is considered living. Building block of life: organelles, molecules and atoms, hypothesis, proposed explanation for set of observations- idea on trial, must be able to test them, can never be proved correct but you can disprove it.
