Particular weathering processes that occur in one area can be different from other areas. & physical in one area or fast & chemical in another. 2 basic patterns of weathering process: physical weathering involve mechanical forces (pushing, pulling, prying, chemical weathering operate on the molecule scale; break down, tear apart, or alter the individual molecules. Factors that control both types and rates of weathering: rates at which the process operate vary, 1) rock (parent rock) characteristics. Solubility whether a rock can be dissolved; halite will dissolve readily when exposed to water but granite weathers slowly.
