Document Summary
Many of the processes are controlled by weather. Sequence of weathering: parent material (bedrock) start out with fresh rock exposed at the surface, regolith parent material that gets broken down into smaller pieces due to weathering (basically unaltered) Soil above regolith; break molecules down into mineral components; final product of weathering; very complex mixture of mineral & organic material. Particular weathering processes that occur in one area can be different from other areas. & physical in one area or fast & chemical in another. 2 basic patterns of weathering process: physical weathering involve mechanical forces (pushing, pulling, prying, chemical weathering operate on the molecule scale; break down, tear apart, or alter the individual molecules. Factors that control both types and rates of weathering: rates at which the process operate vary, 1) rock (parent rock) characteristics. Solubility whether a rock can be dissolved; halite will dissolve readily when exposed to water but granite weathers slowly.
