Document Summary

The study of how the body uses nutrients in feeds to sustain life and for productive purposes. Nutrient is any chemical substance in the diet that supports or maintains life processes. Ruminants (4 compartment stomach) - bacteria digest cellulose, can only grow to a certain size. Feed costs as % of total production costs for various species are: Essential nutrient: a nutrient that is required in the diet (the body can"t produce it fast enough) Non- essential nutrient: a nutrient is not required in the diet because the body can produce that nutrient in sufficient amounts. Most abundant and cheapest nutrient, often overlooked, sources: drinking, feedstuffs, metabolic h2o, if the animals stops eating check the water. Stored as glycogen in animals (not much) or converted to fat and stored. Primary use is to provide the animal with energy. Not required in the diet (for the most part) for non-ruminants. Can obtain glucose from: amino acids, vfa"s and glycerol (lipid backbone)
