ANSC 4009 Chapter : Chromium Picolinate
Document Summary
Chromium picolinate, also known as crpic, is sometimes added to diets of livestock animals for several different reasons. The main use for crpic in the livestock industry is in diets of growing-finishing pigs. Chromium is considered essential for maintenance of normal glucose tolerance by increasing insulin in animals. The absorption and utilization of chromium usually depends on its association with an inorganic molecule such as picolinate. According to an article in the journal of animal science, a study was done at lsu dealing with crpic. Chromium in the form of chromium tripicolinate was added to the traditional corn-soybean diet of growing-finishing pigs. When fed to the pigs, the supplemental dietary chromium increased the longissimus muscle area and percent of muscle. It also decreased the tenth rib fat thickness in the pigs. It provides many different things such as diabetes, cholesterol, and heart benefits. Chromium picolinate has been shown to improve diabetes markers by alleviating both glucose intolerance and insulin resistance.
