ANTH 1001 Chapter : Anth 1001 Day 1
Document Summary
Karl von linn (1707-1778) a swedish botanist, enamored with latin, created taxonomy (carolus linnaeus) creationist, advocate of the principle of fixity of species: species were immutable / unchangeable after their creation. He believed each species had an essence, or a specific combination of traits and characteristics unique to them. In other words, he believed one species cannot evolve into another species. Jean baptiste lamarck (1744-1829) an invertebrate zoologist proposed the first process to explain how a species could change over time. Georges cuvier (1769-1832) a comparative anatomist proposed the theory of catastrophism: In the past there were a series of environmental catastrophes that affected different regions of the world. These catastrophes led to the extinction of the animals/organisms occupying those areas. Once the catastrophe subsided the area was lacking animals. So animals from neighboring regions would migrate to the depopulated animals. Charles lyell (1797-1875) a geologist disagreed with cuvier.
