Anthropology is the study of humans or what it means to be human. Bio-cultural approach- understanding a relationship between biology and culture. Holistic- relating to or concerning with the entire system rather than the separate parts. Consider all parts of the persons, their family, how they dress, their beliefs, what they eat. Comparative (cross-cultural)- look at other cultures and compare them with each other. Ethnocentric- the belief in the inherent superiority of ones own ethnic group or culture. The tendency to view other culture from ones own perspective. Going into a culture with this attitude will not get one very far in understanding other cultures. Cultural relativism - keeping an open mind about a particular group or culture. One must look at each culture has merit within its own system and not judge it. Linguistic anthropology- the scientific study of human languages or communication; how we put sounds together to create meaning and how those sounds create culture.
