ANTH 2423 Chapter : Hmong Nightmare
Document Summary
Hmong are laotian refugees fleeing from their home countries because of the vietnam war. They feared that their good spirits that protect them would not be able to follow them to the us across the ocean. Being unable to sacrifice animals to the spirits, the spirits would find ways to feed themselves. Many hmong converted to christianity to find community and to be polite to their sponsors and to show gratitude. Men are visited by the nightmare more often because they are seen as the people that should be the ones making sure the spirits are fed with sacrifices. To prevent nightmares form appearing at night hmong would: traditionally talk to a shaman, ask a priest for their help indirectly. When they came to the us they started making embroidery that depict life back in laos. Include pictures of the way and picture of their agricultural life.
