BIOL 1001 Chapter : SI Worksheet 11
Document Summary
Channel- just acts as a passageway for certain molecules. Carrier- has binding sites that molecules can bind to in order for the protein. Warm up: review the 5 types of membrane proteins. Receptor proteins- shaped specifically in order to be able to receive only one type of molecule (ex. growth hormones). Recognition proteins- allow other cells to recognize what type of cell is present. Attachment proteins- help the cell attach to other cells, the inner cytoskeleton, or to proteins outside the cell. Transport proteins- regulate the movement of molecules through the plasma membrane; can be broken down into two categories: channel and carrier to open up on the inside of the cell to let it through the membrane. Concentration- the ratio of solute to solvent in a solution. Gradient- the physical difference in concentration, temperature, pressure, charge, etc. between two adjoining regions. Diffusion- movement of solute from areas of high concentration to low concentration.
