Document Summary

When electrons are transferred, the atoms become charged ions. The atom gaining and electron becomes negatively charged and the atom that loses an electron becomes positively charged. They don"t always have to be stronger than ionic bonds. to the same atom. Hydrogen bonds- when an electronegative atom attracts a less electronegative atoms and as a result it has a slightly negative charge (delta negative). When molecules of the same kind have the tendency to stick together. This allows the molecules to have a high surface tension. This means that it is more difficult to break the surface. Hydrophobic is when something is repelled by water. Hydrophilic is when something is attracted to water. Hydrophobic molecules clump together whereas hydrophilic molecules dissolve. Acid- ph is below 7, more h+ ions than oh- ions. Base- ph is above 7, more oh- ions than h+ ions. Neutral- ph is exactly 7, h+ ions and oh- ions are equal.
