The mother status vs the student status vs the friend status. An ascribed status is an inborn status (race, gender, age) An achieved status is a position that we earn (athlete). Some can easily be negative- drug addict, homeless. Overrides all others in our identities- shape someone throughout their entire life. Occupying social positions that create conflict because of their ranking. Your status and what you"re doing doesn"t match up. Role: behaviors expected of a person in a particular status. Role set: different roles attached to a single status. Role conflict: two or more roles that conflict. Might have an exam at night during your shift. Role strain: demands among roles within a single status. If men define situations as real, they are real in their consequences.
