Document Summary

The science of living organisms and life processes. Emergent properties- components which interact to make something greater than the sum of the parts. Heterotroph- able to photosynthesize, make its own food, must rely on other organisms for energy, and makes its own energy. Metabolism- changes the raw material and energy into the forms which are needed for maintenance, growth, reproduction, etc. ; the sum total of all the chemical reactions that occur within an organism. The interaction between atoms is one of the lowest levels of biological organization. Atom: the smallest unit of matter that retains the physical and chemical properties of the element. Protons: are positively charged, found at the core, or nucleus, of the atom. Electrons: light, negatively charged particles that orbit around the nucleus in electron shells. A collection of atoms of the same type forms an element: a substance that can"t be broken down into other substances by chemical reactions.
