Document Summary

In or on the cell membrane: inside the cell (in the cytoplasm or more often in the nucleus). One of the challenges that arise with the development of a large body, with many different cell types and organ systems, is communication between the different cells. Target cells for a message have appropriate receptors on their surfaces or in the cell (see fig 37-2 and 37-3). Some internal communication in multicellular organisms is handled by cell-to-cell contact (see table 37-1). The endocrine system uses hormones to communicate either locally (cell-to-cell) or over a greater distance (see fig 37-1) Distance communication via hormones in animals is different than the local communication by either local hormones or by the immune and nervous systems. Hormone is a chemical secreted by cells in one part of the body and transported (usually in the bloodstream for distance communication) to other body parts where it exerts its action on specific target cells.
