Document Summary

Basic chemistry: we are going to begin by using a reductionist approach. Scale of nature: what are the sizes of biologically important structures (on back of first page of notes) "like dissolves like" like in terms of polarity polar solutes dissolve in polar solutes non polar solutes dissolve in non polar solutes. Atoms: smallest unit of matter separable by normal chemical means. Smallest unit of matter that retains all of the properties of that element. An atom is composed of many smaller particles. particle mass electric charge: proton- the atomic number(defines element)/in nucleus/positive charge neutron- add with protons to get atomic mass/in nucleus/no charge electron- outer shells of atom/negative charge. Valence: the number of electrons an atom needs to gain or lose to fill outer shell of electrons. Also predicts the number of bonds an atom will form. Valence electrons are the electrons in the outer most shell. This model has electrons moving in orbitals or shells around the nucleus.
