Document Summary

Proteins: contain c,o,h,n and usually some sulfur also. A. polymers of amino acids (~ 20 different kinds) All amino acids have the same basic structure: amino acids are bonded together through condensation reactions, "peptide bond . The 3-d shape of proteins is often very important to how they function. Nucleic acids: a. polymers of nucleotides (5 kinds) all nucleotides have the same basic structure. Nucleic acids: are polymers of nucleotides bonded together through condensation reactions. Similarities : large molecules are polymers of smaller subunits the reactions which join these monomers are condensation reactions the reactions which breakdown the polymers are hydrolysis reactions. Carbohydrates and lipids the polymers do not contain any information in the sequence of components, they contain large amounts of energy. Proteins and nucleic acids on the other hand the sequence of components is very important and does contain information, but they contain much less energy. Each bond formed results in the production of 1 molecule of water.
