Concept 35. 1: the plant body has a hierarchy of organs, tissues, and cells. Plants draw nutrients from 2 very different environments: Shoot system : sexual reproduction occurs here. Root system: stores excess nutrients to keep plants alive during winter. One cannot exist w/o the other: describe and compare the three basic organs of vascular plants, roots: necessary photosynthesis, stems: provides support, leaves: needed for water and mineral uptake. In monocots (grasses) the tap root does not form and you end up with a fibrous root system: describe the basic structure of plant stems. Stems : raises leaves exposing them to sunlight: raise reproductive structure, consists of, nodes- points at which leaves are attached. Internodes- segments between nodes: axillary buds- potential to form lateral shoots (branches, apical bud (terminal bud)- located at shoot tip, causes elongation of leaves, explain the phenomenon of apical dominance, apical dominance.
