Document Summary

Effect of ph on chlamydamonas population affect the growth of phytoplankton in freshwater ecosystems. This has numerous ecological and agricultural applications, such as how a shift in global climate will affect phytoplankton levels. Since phytoplankton are a large source of oxygen, this has huge implications for humans. The effect of ph was determined using data collected from nearby freshwater ecosystems on ph and oxygen production levels over four seasons in the university lake and by a controlled laboratory experiment. In the laboratory, the highest population growth was observed at ph 9. 5. This suggests that phytoplankton grow best in mildly basic environments. In our experiment we treated 3 different populations of chlamydamonas with a high, low, and control ph to observe the differences in the population growth. Each ph had 3 different treatments and the results were gathered via spectrophotometer. The absorbance of each treatment was converted into concentration/population and the values were averaged.
