CE 3700 Chapter : Lab 5
Document Summary
Developed in 1918 the penetration test measures the uniformity of the bituminous material (asphalt cement or tar) at the base temperature of 25 degrees celsius. It measures the penetration to a maximum depth of 500mm. According to the astm d5 this procedure requires a spindle with the capability of moving vertically with miniscule friction and to be able to measure the depth of incursion up to 0. 1mm. As for the needle astm requires it to be made from a fully harden stainless steel with a 50 mm in length and 1-1. 02mm in diameter. Measuring the depth that the needle has sunk requires the material to be at a constant 25 degrees celsius. A water bath is used to maintain this constant temperature. To provide a more firm support of the material within the water bath a transfer dish may be used. For hand operated spindles a timing device that measures to 0. 1 or less.
