Document Summary

Organic chem lab 2364 section 4 spring 2013. Title: separation of 2-methoxynaphthalene and trans-cinnamic acid by extraction. Purpose: to apply the technique of extraction to a mixture in order to isolate each one. To use recrystallization and distillation to purify the isolated solids as well as suction filtration. Observations and results: 0. 643 g of 2-methoxynaphthalene and 0. 647 g of trans-cinnamic acid used. 2- methoxynaphthalene is a white neutral solid and trans-cinnamic is a white crystalline acidic substance: substance dissolves after stirring in 25 ml of ethyl acetate. Ethyl acetate is a colorless sweet- smelling liquid: 10 ml of saturated nahco3 solution, 10 ml of water, and 5 ml of saturated nacl was swirled with the ethyl acetate mixture in a 250 ml separatory funnel. The solution turned from clear to cloudy after being shaken: two layers are formed after being shaken.
