Document Summary

Chapter 22 (descent with modification: a darwinian view of life) Evolution has two main ideas: change over time of the generation composition of a population over time, decent of modern organisms with modification from preexisting organisms. Evolutionary adaptation: accumulation of inherited characteristics that enhance organisms" ability to survive in specific environments. Use and disuse: bodies of living organisms are modified through the use or disuse of parts, lamarck inspired a lot of darwin"s ideas. Inheritance of acquired characteristics: these modifications are inherited by offspring. These ideas turned out to be wrong: bodied modifcations are not inheritted by children. Darwin and wallace developed the theory independently. The unequal survival and reproduction of organisms due to environmental forces, resulting in the preservations of favorable adaptations. Process selects from what is available in the gene pool. New characteristics are not created on demand. Relies on the variability that are available at that time. *mechanism behind natural selctio flow chart on phone*
