Reference: meeuwisse, m. , severiens, s. , & born, m. (2010). Interaction, sense of belonging and study success in ethnically diverse student. Synopsis of the article: what used to be the key to student success has changed as diversity in student cultural backgrounds and learning techniques have changed. With the increase in minority group students, the researchers posed the new question, what were all the relationships in a schooling environment that helped students achieve success. By using various experimental models, the researchers were able to distinguish the differences of school experience and success in minority group and majority group students. Minority group students who had formal relationships with their fellow students felt more successful while majority group students who had informal peer relationships had a sense of belonging. Their research also revealed that the sense of belonging increased student academic success. This shows how critical relationships are in the classroom.
