The idea of sublimation is one of the most common ways that humans expel energy from their minds and bodies. Sublimation allows one to divert to an activity that is socially acceptable. Common forms of sublimation are art, music, poetry, and even sports. Sublimation allows individuals to have somewhat of an outlet while reaching new creative heights. Diotima"s speech in plato"s symposium and sigmund freud"s civilization and its discontents, love and beauty are discussed through the idea of sublimation. During diotima"s speech, diotima and socrates talk about love and beauty. Diotima ponders why the word love is such a broad term. She poses socrates with a question, why don"t we say that everyone is lover?" (plato 51). Although referring to everyone as a lover may seem strange, diotima makes a crucial point in saying that everyone is passionate about something, and therefore, saying that the term love has different types of classifications.
