Being that the essay is presented to an audience of graduating college students while he has graduated college himself. In this case he is more experienced in what he is presenting than the audience as a matter of fact. Wallace then continues the former quote by basically saying, the point of my fish story was to help you realize the most blatantly obvious realities are the ones most may have trouble seeing or talking about. He uses the worse i to express how sure he is of his belief, however, most people including myself could say this is not just his belief but every other individual.
