Document Summary
This course will study shakespeare"s plays and poetry as an integral part of the elizabethan theater and also as provocative and entertaining theater for our own times. Shakespeare"s innovative treatment of comedy, tragedy and other dramatic conventions will be the focus of analysis that also emphasizes close attention to the language of his poetry and prose. Cultural, political and social contexts of shakespeare"s theater and audience will also be important, as well as some recent, influential critical approaches to the plays. Shakespeare and his contemporaries; (2) show understanding of key genres and conventions pertinent to shakespeare"s plays and vocabulary associated with them, such as comedy, tragedy, romance, tragi-comedy, etc. ; (3) show facility in interpreting and analyzing. Shakespeare"s text with regards to language, imagery, theme and style; (4) show comprehension of scholarly research on shakespeare; (5) write in college-level english in essay format incorporating research with proper documentation; (6) engage collegially in oral discussion.
