Document Summary

Chapter 10: although they move across the deepest ocean basins, seiches and tsunami are referred to as. Tsunami are shallow-water waves because of the fact their troughs venturing deep into the ocean and hitting the bottom. Seiches occur in confined areas of water or in a basin. A wave with a longer wavelength will travel at a faster speed while a wave with a shorter wavelength is much slower. A progressive wave carries energy into one direction, while a standing wave is produced when constructive interference between different waves takes place. Larger waves tend to have longer wavelengths and they will arrive to the shore first because of their speed. Smaller waves have shorter wavelengths and that is why they appear after larger waves. Chapter 11: although they move through all the ocean tides are referred to as shallow water waves. Tides are considered shallow water waves because they are strongest in shallow water.
