Tried to keep the church independent of power of nobles, lords, prices etc. They feared that the church was getting to involved in the government. The church in the 1000s wanted to detach from the state. The state in this period is mostly nobles. Some of these reforming popes want to assert that the church is seperate and superior to secular power. He had basically no power over his land, because it is separated by over 300 territories. One of the few powers he has, is that within those lands he can appoint bishops. Pope greg vii - the church should be cleaned up, and should assert its dominance above the rulers.
