Ostracism: wealthy aristocrats have the money, a lot of people were in debt and went to the extent to sell their children to slavery and or themselves, had meetings to get the peoples idea and vote. Who could vote: had to be athen born, had to be a male, free, had to own land. Athens had sense of equality and everyone was the same compared to the law. Ostracism- once a year all the citizens get together and wrote a name of someone who they fought were dangerous or did not like if someone get 6,000/20,000 votes they would have to leave athens for 10 years. They wouldn"t take away your property- this way to prevent a potential tyrant from being taking over (ostraca is a broken piece of pottery) Athenians were nervous about possible invasion with the spartans.
