Charlemagne"s holy roman empire is a short life attempt at reviving the old roman empire. Not very successful after his death, split up between his son, grandson etc. In the 800"s through 1000 after charlemagne"s death, European civilization goes through period of weak rulers with no leadership for the people to look to. Nobles dominate political system call feudalism: vikings. Migrated into parts of western europe/medieval europe along with the slavs and the magyars during the 700"s-900"s. Get into the habit of raiding/invading in the 700"s. Took over parts of saxony, the frankish kingdom, iceland, Invasion and movement of peoples causes trouble and social instability in medieval europe. Invasions by the vikings force people to search for protection. People want a strong leader and someone to protect them. This search for protection and leadership leads people to the local nobles, who were to only people wealthy and powerful enough to provide protection: slavs.
