People believed it was started with festivals to dionysus. Went from adding a song to adding a dance then a skit and then a competition. First record of someone winning best actor is thespis in 534 b. c. which is where we get thespian. The one we know most about is the six to eight day festival in the spring in the city of dionysia. A second time plays were performed was the lenaean festival held in january which we know nothing about. The third place where plays were performed is known as the rural dionysia which was villages and such. This is the only time a play could be performed a second time since plays were only allowed to play once. Structure of competition: would write your three plays and submit them to a panel of ten men who were chosen by lot. Then there would be prizes for the best set of tragedies, comedies, actors etc.
