Ushered in a new age of nationalistic competition. Formation of germany really messed it up- instant economic and military power right in center of europe. Germany and italy wanted to prove themselves to france and britain. Imperialism seemed to solve 2 problems: compete with rivals and impress them, mass politics impress international competitors. New age of nationalistic competition overseas empire unite peoples at home (mass politics) Saw imperialism to make people feel part of the state and have the masses behind the politics. Conservatives in britain use imperialism as a vote-getter and it worked. New age of economic competition: industrial revolution slowly spreading westward, britain had no competition but once industrial revolution spreads, the market is becoming more competitive, germany becomes an industrial competitor.
