Battle to define the new nation in 1790s: federalists in power: two facts emerge: federalists and republicans, different views. Not sure if the people should be allowed to completely run the country. Republicans however trust the people and are more concerned with protecting liberty. Republicans on the other hand want agrarian society. They want independent farmers who can control their own destiny. A nation gov. with the power to make sure the liberty of the people does get out of hand. Republicans however want the people to have all of the power: view of each other. Split develops out of policy issues: hamilton"s finance plan, the plan (3 parts, fund (pay) the debt, national bank. In charge of paying the debt and other financial issues: federal support for diversifying the economy. Also wants to create incentives to companies that innovate, bring in new tech, and build roads/transportation: hamilton"s motives.
