Less land becomes available bc of the indians and the french. Got more in to lumbering and gives wood to the navy. Trade with portuguese and spanish which is forbidden. French had good relations with native americans. French claimed huge amounts of territory: creates problems with the abenakei tribe. Fewer puritans are converting- not feeling the urge to be church member. The first generation was persecuted and then was forced to create a puritan stay: children and grandchildren were born into this puritan society and the settled communities and didn"t have a desire to become religious. Became more difficult to acquire land externally. Instead of puritan children wanting to become religious, native americans were now wanting to be members of the church- praying indians. A christian convert, john, was murdered for spying on the english, presumably: authorities in plymouth accessed and hung 3 suspects for this murder.
