Traded for weapons with europeans, got firearms (much more deadly) Choctaw pushed out of land by chickasaw b/c they had guns. Columbus was not the first to reach americas. Columbus (not a nice guy) made first connection to americas that sticks. Needed route since turks cut off silk road. New world gave opportunity for low class/ poor. First to start colonizing new world, lots of gold and silver ships and armies. Elizabeth wants to stay away from religious wars (protestant vs catholic) English pirates allowed to use english ports in order to steal from spanish ships in caribbean. Establish base on island off north carolina coast, roanoke island. Find gold, make claims on new world, northwest passage, base for pirates. Plan falls apart, soldiers in netherlands not there.
